Physorg: Dr William Parnell's team in the University's School of Mathematics have been working on the theory of invisibility cloaks which, until recently, have been merely the subject of science fiction.

In recent times, however, scientists have been getting close to achieving 'cloaking' in a variety of contexts. The work from the team at Manchester focuses on the theory of cloaking devices which could eventually help to protect buildings and structures from vibrations and natural...

VOA: In the central Philippines, efforts to rescue victims from Monday’s 6.7-magnitude earthquake in western provinces are being hampered by impassable roads and bridges. There are at least 15 confirmed dead.

The worst-hit area is the island province of Negros where at least one landslide in a mountainside town near the epicenter is believed to have buried dozens of people alive. The Philippine Civil Defense Office says all major roads and bridges to that area are badly damaged and...

Daily Yomiuri: There is a 70 percent probability the Tokyo metropolitan area will be hit directly by a strong earthquake of magnitude-7 level within four years, according to data compiled by a University of Tokyo research team.

The preliminary calculations conducted by a team from the university's Earthquake Research Institute were based on intensified seismic activity in the area after the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11.

The findings are more dire than a similar estimate...

DailyStar: BEIRUT: Beirut MP Mohammad Qabbani said Thursday that 20 percent of buildings across Lebanon risk collapse should an earthquake occur.

VOR: Last year saw the number of underground tremors in Japan going up a hefty seven times, with the national meteorological service reporting almost 10,000 jolts registered on and around the Japanese islands -most of them aftershocks of the catastrophic, Force 9.0, earthquake that hit the country’s northwest on March 11, 2011.

ScienceDaily: ScienceDaily (Dec. 8, 2011) — A groundbreaking study led by University of Miami (UM) scientist Shimon Wdowinski shows that earthquakes, including the recent 2010 temblors in Haiti and Taiwan, may be triggered by tropical cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons), according to a presentation of the findings at the 2011 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco.

"Very wet rain events are the trigger," said Wdowinski, associate research professor of marine geology and geophysics at the UM...

UCN: Oklahomans more accustomed to tornadoes than earthquakes suffered through a series of weekend temblors that cracked buildings, buckled a highway and rattled nerves.

One quake late Saturday was the state's strongest ever and shook a football stadium 50 miles away at the end of a big nationally watched college game.

"That shook up the place, had a lot of people nervous," Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon said. "Yeah, it was pretty strong."
